07 Dec Shelters Open Ahead of Freezing Temps
Columbia, S.C. (WACH) — A slew of cold weather is headed to the Midlands and shelters are already preparing to open their doors.
The Inclement Weather Center (IWC) will open starting Thursday night, expected to remain open until Monday.
Lauren Wilkie, the Director of Programs for Transitions, says Wednesday already hinted at the freezing temperatures to come.
“We follow the National Weather Service,” said Wilkie. “If it’s 40 degrees or below, or if it’s really rainy and 45 below, then we usually open. So, we do look like we’ll be open tomorrow through Monday.”
Christoper Lee, who previously stayed at the IWC the last time it was open, says it is extremely important that those who have no place to go find shelter by the time the freezing weather.
